Carrier 65LL Coolant Distribution Unit

The Carrier 65LL Coolant Distribution Unit (CDU) is an advanced liquid-to-liquid cooling solution designed to meet the growing thermal demands of modern data centers. Engineered for direct-to-chip (DtC) cooling applications, the Carrier 65LL CDU delivers optimized thermal and hydronic performance through modular heat exchangers capable of achieving approach temperatures as low as 2 °C (3.6 °F). This innovative design improves overall cooling system efficiency and can reduce energy consumption by up to 15%, allowing more power to be dedicated to IT operations rather than cooling infrastructure.

The unit is factory-assembled, pre-wired, and tested for plug-and-play installation, ensuring faster deployment and simplified integration. It features hot-swappable and redundant components, an integrated uninterruptible power supply (UPS), and optional Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) for enhanced reliability. SmartVu™ controls provide real-time monitoring and seamless connectivity with Automated Logic (ALC) and third-party Building Automation Systems (BAS). With a global design and manufacturing footprint, the Carrier 65LL CDU offers scalability, lifecycle support, and operational flexibility for hyperscale and enterprise data centers.

The Carrier 65LL CDU 1.3 MW variant selected for the assessment is purpose-built for large-scale data centers requiring high-capacity cooling with minimal footprint. This model delivers a nominal cooling capacity of 1,300 kW at 4 °C ATD and supports approach temperatures as low as 2 °C for superior thermal efficiency. Its compact cabinet design, with a shallow depth of 986 mm, allows easy placement in mechanical galleries while providing three-sided access for maintenance.

The 1.3 MW unit incorporates dual pumps in an N+1 configuration, sensor redundancy, and an integrated UPS to ensure uninterrupted operation. Connectivity options include BACnet, Modbus, and CCN protocols for seamless integration with building automation systems. Safety features such as integrated leak detection, pressure relief valves, and compliance with UL-62368-1 standards make this variant ideal for mission-critical environments. Designed for reliability and energy efficiency, the 1.3 MW CDU is the perfect solution for hyperscale and enterprise facilities seeking maximum uptime and operational resilience. The LCA analysis is based on a weighted average method accounting for production across manufacturing sites located in Mexico, Spain and China.
