STRUCTURAL EXPANDED CLAY AGGREGATE (CH) Aggregate size 0 to 16 mm
Expanded clay is a ceramic granular aggregate manufactured from clay as the primary raw material. The clay, mixed with an organic additive, is first dried and subsequently expanded up to 4–5 times its original volume in rotary kilns at temperatures of approximately 1200°C.
The resulting expanded clay granules are then screened and crushed into different particle size distributions for sale in either loose or bagged form.
Each granule consists of a hard ceramic outer shell enclosing a porous, honeycomb-like core. Expanded clay is characterized by low density and relatively high compressive strength.
Expanded clay granules are classified into:
• standard tout-venant (0–30 mm, bulk density 330–560 kg/m³), and
• structural tout-venant (0–16 mm, bulk density 620–720 kg/m³).
Structural tout-venant has a lower degree of expansion and consequently higher compressive strength compared to standard grades.
This Environmental Product Declaration refers exclusively to structural tout-venant structural expanded clay, in bulk form. Depending on particle size distribution, the bulk density of the loose material, determined in accordance with UNI EN 1097-3, ranges from 620 to 720 kg/m³.
